Balanced
Companion
Dog Training
Our rule about training equipment.....
No
matter what piece of training equipment you use... if you don't have to use
it, it's the correct one.
If you have to keep
using it, you should be trying something else.... because
it isn't working! BUT... you should be allowed to "try before
you buy" Have
you done all of your homework?? Have you used your
training equipment correctly?? Have
you only taught your dog to respect the training equipment or have
you used the training equipment to help you teach your dog to
respect you??!! There is a difference.....
Don't
get fooled by anyone trying to sell you the latest fad piece of
equipment..... training equipment should do just that.... help you
with your training, get your dog's attention and have your dog focus
on you! Most of the new pieces are only restraint devices,
they don't teach your dog anything..... BE
AWARE! That any piece of training equipment, if used
incorrectly, can do potential harm to your dog! Make sure to follow
the fitting & usage instructions exactly... if it doesn't come
with any then don't buy it! WHAT
IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WELL-TRAINED DOG AND THE "AVERAGE
DOG"?
Training is communication between the dog and the handler, not what
piece of training equipment the dog is wearing or what type of
treats we have in our pockets! BALANCED TRAINING MAKES
YOUR DOG MORE RELIABLE AND GETS THE RESULTS YOU WANT QUICKLY AND
FAIRLY. Each
dog and handler team we see is worked on an individual basis.
As the handler, you have to decide for yourself what method is best
for you and your dog. You have to set your own limits on the
way you deliver your praise or discipline, and find your own key as
to how much is enough for your own pet dog. Both praise and
discipline delivered in a fair, balanced way will help you build a
respectful relationship with your dog. We aren't naive enough
to believe that every dog is "good" all of the time, just
like every dog isn't "bad" all of the time, so it is
important for you to sort out the acceptable behaviours from the
unacceptable behaviours and clearly communicate your limits to your
pet.
DaMax Kennels
offers different courses designed for all types of dogs of any
age. All courses have a Training manual available that includes
canine communication and behavioural development charts, information on
equipment, training tips, recognizing behaviour problems, behaviour
modifications, vaccinations, parasites, house-training, and the Canine
Good Neighbour Test. The
group lessons are one hour, once per week. Graduation classes are on
the last week of each course. Here at DaMax, our rule is that
if you put in the time then you will be rewarded! I hesitate
to use the word "graduation" when actually it should be
called a "confidence & communication"
achievement. Realistically, that is all you need to achieve
respect and manners from your dog. You can enjoy your dog as what it
was truly meant to be....a family companion, able to go different
places with you and your family....socializing with
self-restraint!

Basic
Class - Basic class is designed for
dogs over 3 months old. Basic Manners are emphasized. Come,
Sit, Down, Stay, Off, Quiet, Lets Go, Wait, Heel and O.K. are some of
the new Vocabulary words that your dog will learn. How to
achieve the Proper Discipline level for your dog and Learning
Canine Body Language in order to be clear about what you
want are also the two main goals for this class. Everyone
learns how to praise the good dog, whether you wish to use treats,
toys or pats. We work intensively on coming when called,
distractions, heeling and the automatic sit. There is a test
day, with graduation certificates awarded to all
participants. Taking the time to train your pet shows
us that you care enough to have your pet be the best friend and neighbour
he can be. Nutrition, grooming and first aid information are included in
this class, with plenty of hands-on work. HOME WORK SHEETS ARE
INCLUDED EACH WEEK.
6 week
course (one hour per week $150.00 +HST MANUAL $10.

Intermediate
/ Rally-Obedience Class - This class is designed for the graduates of the
basic class. Known as the tune-up class, it includes
everything that you learned in basic class, fine tuning what you
already know, plus a few new things. Achieving a quicker,
cleaner response time with fewer cues and less work on your part is
one of the goals of this class. We are also going to concentrate
on how not to use training equipment, but how to gain the undivided
attention of your dog. A favorite training rule of ours is, if
you have the dog's eyes, you have the dogs brain! Use
it! Drop on command, recalls to heel, swing finish,
quarter turns, figure 8's and in motion stands, sits and downs are
some of the new moves we will be learning. You will earn your
certificate by demonstrating your skills of communication on leash,
hands-free and off-leash. Rally-Obedience exercises are mixed in
at each class so we can achieve an entire routine in the last two
weeks of the course.
We learn lots of new
words and actions that will improve your outside control where there
are distractions too numerous to mention. Two of the most needed, but
seldom achieved commands we see as trainers, heel and come are
emphasized as well as all of the moves we learn during the Intermediate
class. Walking on the
leash and public manners are also stressed here.
